Dehner Patrol Boots on Cops

Bal-Laced Dehner Patrol Boots

Continuing with a short series about the kinds of boots that motor officers wear (in the United States… I have to remember that a huge number of visitors to this blog come from outside the U.S.)….

While I was at the staging area for the Law Ride, an event that was held on May 13, 2012, in Washington, DC, I looked at the boots that the motor officers who were there were wearing. Interestingly (or should I say, “disappointingly”), there were relatively few motor officers wearing Dehner patrol boots.

Why?

Chippewa Hi-Shine Engineer Boots

Chippewa Hi-Shine Pride of Boots

While I was at the staging area for the Law Ride, an event that was held on May 13, 2012, in Washington, DC, I looked at the boots that the motor officers who were there were wearing. This post is a second in a series of three where I comment on what I observed.

Four motorcops from the Orlando, Florida, PD were wearing Chippewa Hi-Shine Engineer Boots, model #71418. These are tall engineer boots made in the traditional style with a large round toe and single strap across the instep, and a buckle closure at the top of the boot shaft. Many motor officers choose this style of boot over patrol boots with a bal-laced instep.

My opinion?

Chippewa Trooper Boots

Chippewa Trooper Boots on Motorcops

While I was at the staging area for the Law Ride, an event that was held on May 13, 2012, in Washington, DC, I looked at the boots that the motor officers who were there were wearing.

Two outfits — one from Florida, and another from Georgia — were wearing Chippewa Trooper Boots, model #27950. These are standard-style tall police patrol boots with a bal-laced instep.

Living in Two Worlds

Cops

Cops at staging area

This past Sunday’s motorcycle ride underscored to me how I live in two worlds simultaneously, and easily flow from one to the other. What worlds? The “straight bikers” world, and the “gay bootman” world.

I gathered and rode with a large group of bikers who are cops, retired cops, or are in some way related to a law enforcement professional or work in the profession. We rode to join an event that is held around the same time as “Police Week” in Washington, DC. Motor officers from only seven (7) jurisdictions joined that ride this year, which was disappointing.

Anyway, I digress… what two worlds?

No Prom, Again

I wrote last year about my great nephew and his disinterest in going to his high school prom. He was taunted as “being gay” because he didn’t want to attend this annual event at his school. Like me, he hates dressing up, all the fuss about proms in general, and the cost. (Last year’s post is here.)

Prom season has rolled around again for my nephew, but he has matured quite a bit from last year. This year, when he was asked, “who are you taking to the prom?” by classmates and his family, he answered,

The Trials and Tribulations of Senior Pals

I keep rather busy with a voluntary job that kinda grew on me… looking after a fairly large contingent of people I call my “senior pals.” All of these folks live nearby, and my cadre of those who I check on, help out, and look after has grown by word-of-mouth. First it was my mother’s next-door neighbor, then her friend, then her friend’s friend, and so on. I sorta help out by being a “rent-a-son” where the rent is cheap (zero) and the smiles are plentiful.

However, having such a large group of friends who are significantly older poses its challenges.

My Take on Same-Sex Marriage

Lately, there has been a lot of news about same-sex marriage, especially in light of the state of North Carolina placing bigotry and hatred into its state constitution by a referendum that appeared on its May 8 statewide primary election ballot. Hmmm… I guess you can tell where I stand on this matter, huh?

It’s more than that, and quite complicated.

The Job Offer

I participate on one of the world’s largest social networks related to business, work, and employment — but I don’t want to say its name here. Let’s just say that it starts with the letter “L” and ends with “In.” Figure out what it is?

I’ve been on that site, professionally, since 2005. It provides interesting information, particularly in its discussion forums where professionals in my field share questions, insights, and ideas.

A few weeks ago, I commented in one of those discussion forums on an issue about which I have a lot of experience. I shared ideas, suggestions, and provided some insight into how people respond and think about threats caused by natural hazards.

Soon after that, someone contacted me with a request to talk by phone about that issue. He asked some good questions, and I agreed that a phone discussion would be a worthwhile follow-up, and could provide a better means of probing the matter than going back-and-forth via email.

Turns out that the gentleman who contacted me was a recruiter for a major company. They wanted to interview me for a position.

Tarnished Tiara

I was joking around with a buddy who writes to me regularly that my tiara is tarnished.

That was in response to something he said, “I didn’t think guys who wore tiaras did that kind of manly stuff…,” which I accepted as a joke, as he intended. We were referencing the work that I have been doing to renovate the kitchen in my home.

Yeah, it is real, manly, hard work.
