Five Tips for Boots (aka “Hacks”)–Part 5 Breaking In Tall Boots

This is the last installment of my “boot hacks” (or tips) series. This post addresses the most frequent question I have received over the years and also see in comments on social media and other places on the ‘net.

The issue of feeling discomfort, heel slippage, and calf tightness (or squeezing, especially if worn with breeches or pants tucked in) is frequently mentioned when guys get new boots and begin wearing them, as this cop (using a photo I took years ago) describes…

Boot Improvising

One idea provided to me by my buddy “S” with whom I went on a crazy-awesome motorcycle adventure in Utah on ideas to blog about was “boot improvisation.” He suggested that I describe what boots we selected for this trip, and why these boots were different from what one may expect to wear when riding a Harley.

Great idea! Thanks, “S”! So here goes… what did we improvise (that is, choose to make available) for boots on this trip, and why? More after the jump…

Riding in Loggers

The weather where I live sure has been fickle, but in a good way. Once again last Sunday, the forecast was for the weather to be in the mid-50s (12.5C). With all the crap going on in Washington bloviating from the Liar-In-Chief, I really needed to get out for a head-clearing ride.

So I contacted buddies from my former riding club, and they invited me…

The Ups and the Downs

The most “up” time recently that Spouse and I had was our wonderful, fun, and deliriously happy Thanksgiving Feastival last Thursday. Seems like an eon ago.

Then on Friday, I took Spouse to get not one, not two, but three MRIs where his ongoing medical issues continue to be probed.

We thought after that fun, we would return home, kick back, and rest. But…

Fall Riding Is the Best

The Weather was great this past Sunday, so nine of my buddies and I met to go for a ride through one of our favorite places — the Catoctin Mountain of north-central Maryland.

It was chilly (52F/11C), but dry, sunny, and seasonable. After giving my Harley a thorough inspection and air in its tires, I put on my gear, consisting of what you see here…

Look Where You Want The Bike To Be

This past weekend, Spouse and I attended a police motorcycle riding competition. I served as a judge. More on that in future blog posts. Today, I wanted to reaffirm solid riding advice I have learned and seen applied by the pros.

Motorcycle riding instructors give lots of advice for safe and precision riding. Back in the day, I did that as well (taught motorcycle riding courses and also applied those skills to my own riding.)

Once you get past the safety advice, one of the best tips has been…

Riding Bikes

I have an ongoing dialogue with buddies who ride bicycles. They talk about being a “biker.” I say, “ha! I am a biker… you are a bicyclist. There is a difference between riding a BIKE and a toy!”

This banter continues among and with my die-hard bicycle-riding friends.

However, as an example of good sportsmanship with my twin great nephews, I did not quibble words when they asked me to…
