Independence Day: Let’s Celebrate!

fireworks2Today marks my country’s 237 year since declaring its independence from Great Britain. We still love the Brits, though I wish they would learn to spell words without superfluous vowels. (giggle.)

This morning, I will celebrate what makes America great by attending a citizenship swearing-in ceremony in my state’s capital. For the past four months, I have tutored three hard-working people on United States civics, history, and government to prepare them to take the Citizenship test, the last step in the process of becoming a citizen of the United States.

Rain Changes Plans (and muds the boots)

I had planned to go riding (motorcycles) with some buddies yesterday, but it rained… and rained… and rained… all morning. Caused a change of plans. I contacted my friends and we decided to cancel the ride. That happens.

What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up?

I was having a very serious discussion with my ten-year-old great nephew the other day. This kid is older than his age; so serious, thoughtful, and sensitive.

He asked me, “what did you want to be when you grew up?” That was easy, but what followed was difficult: “is what you are doing now the same? (as what you thought you wanted to be doing when you grew up?)

Workin’ Weekend

RollThunOnce again on this fine and lovely holiday weekend (it is Memorial Day on Monday here in the U.S), I find myself not “riding to the wall” (that is, participating in an event called “Rolling Thunder,” an event where motorcyclists from all over gather at the Pentagon and then ride through downtown Washington, DC, to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial for a ceremony honoring those who served, who died, and who remain classified as “MIA.”)

Nope, as usual, this weekend, I’m workin’ in da’ ‘Burgh.
