Booted in Hawaii

My meetings ended early on Thursday, so a buddy took me out for a tour. Fortunately, the tradewinds have begun blowing again, so the crappy air that was making me have severe allergic reactions was better, especially on the far side of the island.

Loggers at the Office

Yesterday, it was bitterly cold in these parts. New record low temperatures were reached at local airports. -15C… sounds colder than 5F. Nonetheless, whatever scale you use, it was damn cold!

The worst problem I have with cold — other than not being able to ride my Harley — is that my feet get cold. Even with boots and thick socks, I don’t like cold feet. (Ask my spouse!)

I have a fairly new and good-looking pair of Chippewa insulated “super loggers”. So I decided on casual dress-down Friday to…

Men’s Decision-Making on Footwear

Nocostrich08As my regular readers know, I enjoy wearing boots. I wear them every day, usually two to three pairs each day, sometimes more, depending on what I am doing and where I am going.

Lucroperblack10Let me provide the context of my life: I am a middle-aged adult man, living in a single-family house in a quiet neighborhood in the suburbs of Washington, DC. I work in an office and am a middle-management professional. I ride a motorcycle (when the weather is suitable), and a four-wheel cage (truck) when not astride my Harley. I eschew the trappings of yuppiehood (fancy cars, the latest gadgets, and braggardry). In my off-time I build things, remodel homes, look after elderly friends, and serve as a civic leader in the community where I live (and where I grew up.) I am married to the love of my life. I am well-educated, including graduate-level studies in the field of observing human behavior and anticipating results of human action.

It is this latter element of my background that gives me some insight into the topic of this post — how men make decisions on footwear.

Boots Worn Recently

I posted recently that I was not writing blogs about what boots I wore each day during the week because it took a lot of time do construct those detailed posts. However, in response to some comments and emails I received, my commentary of “boots of some period of time” has returned, albeit more abbreviated. Here goes…

Voluntary Remodeling Contractor

Most of my loyal blog readers know that I do lots of home remodeling through voluntary efforts. I usually join groups who remodel homes for seniors to make their homes move livable and to accommodate their needs as they grow older.

Yesterday, however, I served as a General Contractor (supervisor) of the largest “build” I have ever done — to totally remodel the home of a wounded warrior to whom I was introduced by a senior pal. This guy is the grandson of one of my dearest senior pals. She asked me if I would oversee a remodeling job for her grandson’s house three months ago.

It took a long time for all of the arrangements to come through, but yesterday and today, everything came into place.

Daily Boot Chatter

Lucphython01I have made it very clear that I wear boots every day while doing everything that I do. I wear them with nice clothes that I wear to work. I wear them even with suits on the rare occasions that I have to dress up. I wear motorcycle boots while riding my Harley — always — no silly unsafe sneakers for me! I even wear boots when I do my long vigorous walks — hikers. Again, sneakers? Bah, humbug!

It is amusing to me how many people know that I’m a regular and reliable “boot guy.” I catch them stealing glances, asking themselves and sometimes voicing the question, “what boots does he have on today?”

Boot Favorites

A good friend of mine recently asked me, “Do you have a very very favorite pair of boots (cowboy or otherwise)? Like, the “bury me in these” boots?”

He said that it would be really hard for him to make a choice, and the same is true for me. I can’t say that I have one particular pair of boots that are my absolutely favorites, but here are some of my top choices.
