Sixth and Cruise

Chipharness99Sunday, I had the pleasure of using my touring class Harley to take a long ride. But before I gave myself a day off, I had to cram a lot of work into one day on the day before.

Saturday was busy from dawn to dusk, about 14 hours of work-work-work. But even before dawn, the day began by rising at 0430 and meeting my senior early-morning walking pal for a six-miler. Back home by dawn, showered, changed to work clothes and my second pair of what would be six pairs of boots that day and…

Bad-Ass and No-Boot Brainless

This past weekend was Memorial Day, a holiday in the U.S. to recognize those who have died while serving in the military and to decorate their graves — thus the earlier holiday name of “Decoration Day.” It goes back to the U.S. Civil War.

FieldOfHonorNightIt is also a weekend when hundreds of thousands of motorcyclists put on their leather vests depicting their affiliation, club, military, or veteran’s organization and descend on Washington, DC,…

Law Ride 2014

LRCapitol01As you saw on this blog yesterday, I rode in an organized, police-escorted motorcycle ride in downtown DC on Sunday. The event was called the “Law Ride,” and kicks off Police Week in Washington, DC. The ride is held to pay respects to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

According to the organizers, this event has been held for 19 years, though I only found out about it and began attending it in 2006, eight years ago.

How was Sunday’s ride?

DC Ride in Honor

Yesterday, I rode with 8 buddies and my cousin into downtown DC, queued up, then went on a police escorted ride to honor those who have died in the line of duty.

It was a spectacularly sunny and warm day. DC is stunning on such a day. See some of my photos after the jump.

Police Escorted Motorcycle Ride

Policeescortedride02Yesterday, I rode in a charity motorcycle ride. This was to raise funds for research on a disease that took the life of my home county’s beloved Fire Chief. I had worked with that Chief years ago as I began my Senior Safety Saturday project. He could not have been more supportive.

The ride went all over our home county — some 60 miles (96km) — and through seven fire stations that this chief had worked in through his long and storied career.

What is a police-escorted ride like?

Forcing Time to Ride

RideNov2013aThe title of this post may be puzzling for some readers. One would think that as enthusiastically as I write about riding my Harley, that I would find every opportunity to ride whenever I can.

Well, I do love to ride, but I also struggle with balancing riding time with obligations and responsibilities.

Today is one of those days where I got myself into a situation where I will go for a ride all day. Should be fun, but I still have that nagging feeling of shirking responsibilities and caregiver duties for my spouse.

Here’s what’s going on.

Hi Vis

Okay, I admit… leather is cool-looking, keeps a biker warm, and provides good protection if involved in a crash. However, traditional black leather is not that visible, especially in the dark.

Another rider who regularly reads this blog saw my post titled “see and be seen” (March 8, 2014), where I showed some new, bright halogen beams that my spouse bought for me and I had installed on my motorcycle. This rider wrote to me and asked, logically,
