Chippewa Hi-Shine boots with added mid-sole and lug sole

Lately, several people have written to me to ask questions about choosing the correct size of boots, especially when stores that sell boots are hard to find or not available and therefore people are considering purchasing boots from on-line vendors.

Their questions have asked,…

Insoles for Boots

Lucmidbrownfr09I am asked from time to time about how to make boots feel more comfortable on the foot. Since I wear boots every day as my only choice of footwear, having boots that feel comfortable is important.

All boots come with some sort of insole — from cardboard to a thin cushion to an actual built-in gel insole. Most boots, though, have only paper-thin insoles of cardboard.

Interestingly, some higher-priced boots come with paper-thin insoles and they feel hard as a rock to wear. This includes Lucchese boots. Other lower-priced commercially made boots come with cushion insoles, like Dan Post boots, and feel comfortable right away.

What do I recommend about insoles for boots?

No Thousand Miles in Wolverine Boots

Wolverinebrown04I wrote a post on this blog on December 10, 2013, comparing Wolverine “1,000 Mile” Stockton Engineer Boots with White’s Nomad engineer boots. My opinion of the Wolverine boots was reinforced today when I wore those boots on a day packed with errands. I’m not sure why I picked those boots from all that I have, but I did.

What do I say now about Wolverine boots?

Another Man’s Opinion About Flip-Flops

I am not the only man who has a disdain for those ugly, unsightly, dorky-looking things that some men choose to wear in summer months. I can’t call them footwear. They really aren’t. They are a symbol of a very poor choice made by men who don’t know how bad they look and how bad they are for the feet. Or to quote an article in a newspaper, “flip-flops connote a sort of half-dressed slatternliness, a sense that the wearer has forgotten to do anything at all with his or her body from the ankles down.”

A visitor to this blog, Craig, wrote a comment on an old post where my foot doctor said that he strongly disapproved of flip-flops. Because that post was so old, I doubt readers would see it, so I brought the comment forward to make this mid-40s man’s words about a new passion for wearing harness boots and disdain for flip-flops and sandals more evident.

Here is what Craig said:

“How” Questions About Boots

Here are more examples of actual, as-written, as-searched, boot-related “how” questions that direct visitors to my website or this blog. Some questions are serious, some are strange, and some are amusing. If you are wondering, I can “see” the questions that direct visitors to my website/blog, but I cannot tell who the visitor actually is. I respect privacy. I figure, though, if at least one person is asking via a search engine, then others may have the same questions.

Here goes…

Decent Affordable Cowboy Boots

JustintandistressedSomeone sent me a question recently, asking, “What’s a decent cowboy boot company similar to Chippewa [for motorcycle boots]. Not too expensive but good quality? Do you have an article about that?”

I searched this blog, and was astounded that while I have written often about cowboy boots, I did not have one article to address that question — until now. Most guys, especially those who do not wear boots often or are new to boots would consider boots that do not attract much attention — subdued colors, regular walking heels, round or less pointed toes. They just want a pair of plain old, decent, and affordable boots to wear.

LucclassicWhat are my suggestions for cowboy boots that are decent and affordable today?

Soles of Comfort

Justintandistressed08I am sharing an observation that I discovered, then confirmed with several other guys who wear boots often — firefighters, cops, and motorcycle riders. Most all agree on “comfort comparisons” of boots with smooth soles, compared with boots with “big lug” soles.

Here is the observation and results of personal comparison tests–

Dynamic Boot Collection

For a while this month, my boot collection had grown to over 200 pairs — 202 pairs to be precise. Yikes! Not even a boot aficionado like me could really wear 202 pairs of boots. I had been teetering above and below 200 pairs for almost the whole year. But now I’m down to 196 pairs, and that number will decrease in the months to come. What’s been going on?

Foot Doctor’s Advice: Wear Boots

For the past several months, my left heel has been hurting a lot when I take the first few steps when I rise from bed, and later in the evening, close to bedtime. The morning pain has been sharp and quite irritating, but it subsides soon enough.

I knew something was wrong, though, when the pain persisted. I’m no dummy… I figured I had plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of a tendon that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the ball.

I was being a general goofball guy, hoping it would go away, while concentrating on getting my partner over his long-term illness. Now that my partner is feeling better (not recovered, but better than before), I thought that now was a good time to see a doctor and get this problem addressed.
