Daily Boot Chatter

Lucphython01I have made it very clear that I wear boots every day while doing everything that I do. I wear them with nice clothes that I wear to work. I wear them even with suits on the rare occasions that I have to dress up. I wear motorcycle boots while riding my Harley — always — no silly unsafe sneakers for me! I even wear boots when I do my long vigorous walks — hikers. Again, sneakers? Bah, humbug!

It is amusing to me how many people know that I’m a regular and reliable “boot guy.” I catch them stealing glances, asking themselves and sometimes voicing the question, “what boots does he have on today?”

More on Motorcycle Engineer Boots–Reviews

Sutton2Recently, I exchanged email with someone who read boot reviews on my website. He rides a motorcycle and also works in an office like I do, so when he chooses boots to wear while commuting with his motorcycle, he wants the boots to have a good-looking appearance — suitable for office wear. Note, I refrain from saying “business wear,” because I am not talking about a business suit — more like “business casual” wear which is customary nowadays in most U.S. offices. (Thankfully… though I have been a leader in that “trend” long before it became the norm here in the U.S. LOL.)

The guy who wrote to me sent me some comments and a review that he posted about Frye Sutton boots, shown here. In his email…

Boot Favorites

A good friend of mine recently asked me, “Do you have a very very favorite pair of boots (cowboy or otherwise)? Like, the “bury me in these” boots?”

He said that it would be really hard for him to make a choice, and the same is true for me. I can’t say that I have one particular pair of boots that are my absolutely favorites, but here are some of my top choices.

Steel Toe vs. non-Steel Toe Boots

Chipnonsteel08I received an email from a guy who said that he was new to motorcycling and wanted my opinion on the choices of steel toe or non-steel toe engineer boots to wear when riding.

First-off, congratulations on the wise choice to wear motorcycle boots when riding.

His questions were:

a lot of these type of boots have a steel toe. Is the steel toe necessary? Does the steel toe add to the weight of the boot? Is the steel toe a safety feature? If so, what how comfortable are boots with a steel toe?

My response was…

Fewer Boots at Folsom?

DorksA friend of mine brought to my attention that an observation was shared on an on-line boot board about what guys were wearing at the recent Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco. The observation was, “They say that the Folsom Street Fair is the largest leather event in the world, but I’m sorry to report that only a small percentage of the crowd wore leather, and even a smaller number wore boots. It was shorts, jock straps, jeans, or nothing at all, along with thousands of sneakers, sneakers and more sneakers.”

My friend asked me what I thought about this. I have some ideas about how the demographics have changed in today’s culture among 20- and 30- year olds, compared with the culture and norms of the days when I was their age (1980s through mid 90s).

Boots of the Past Two Weeks

Note: a technical error in this post prevented it from appearing completely. I found the error and fixed it on the evening of September 1. If you visited this post before that and it looked weird or ended abruptly, please read on… the error is gone.)

This is a catch-up post, describing what boots I wore while on my business trip out west during the week of August 18 – 22, then my daily boots through Saturday, August 30. Here goes…

How to Interpret Boot Marketing

Rebel3You have to give credit to the hucksters, or pros in writing advertising and marketing copy. Some of them are very gifted in their writing skills to promote the products they are hired to write about.

We see this stuff all the time. We are constantly bombarded with advertising and marketing hype. It is both a science and an art to write ad copy to attract attention and get someone to buy a product, like boots.

For example, here is copy from a popular boot retailer’s web page about a pair of boots, pictured here:
