Guest “Cop”

On Saturday, I was at my mother-in-law’s house. She lives near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA. I did a lot of maintenance work on her house and landscaping. I tell ya, manually trimming 50 shrubs is no fun, but alas, it got done.

By late afternoon, my chores were completed and I was in her kitchen preparing dinner. Oh — that too. My MIL does not cook any more.

While we were eating, my cell phone rang. I immediately jumped because I remain worried about my spouse, so I thought my brother was calling to report something had gone wrong back home. Nope — instead, it was a sergeant, a motor officer, from the local PD.

“Hey, you want to join me to ride escort tonight?”

Law Ride 2014

LRCapitol01As you saw on this blog yesterday, I rode in an organized, police-escorted motorcycle ride in downtown DC on Sunday. The event was called the “Law Ride,” and kicks off Police Week in Washington, DC. The ride is held to pay respects to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

According to the organizers, this event has been held for 19 years, though I only found out about it and began attending it in 2006, eight years ago.

How was Sunday’s ride?

Police Escorted Motorcycle Ride

Policeescortedride02Yesterday, I rode in a charity motorcycle ride. This was to raise funds for research on a disease that took the life of my home county’s beloved Fire Chief. I had worked with that Chief years ago as I began my Senior Safety Saturday project. He could not have been more supportive.

The ride went all over our home county — some 60 miles (96km) — and through seven fire stations that this chief had worked in through his long and storied career.

What is a police-escorted ride like?

Chippewa Hi-Shine Strapless Boots 71419

Late last Autumn, I received an email announcing that a new style of Chippewa Boots were being offered — model 71419 “Strapless Engineers.”

What are “strapless” engineer boots? Same style as regular engineers — round toe, form of the vamp (foot), stovepipe shaft, buckle at the top of the shaft — but no strap and buckle across the instep.Chipstrapless04The boots took a long time to be made. Delivery was promised in January, but slipped until February, then March, and finally the boots arrived in April.

Now that I own a pair of these boots, what is my opinion and review?

New Improvements for Stock Dehner Boots

Balstock1208A motorcop spoke with me in November, asking about Dehner boots.

Cop: “My co-workers tell me that you know a lot about boots. I have some questions about Dehners.”

Me: “yeah, I have some experience. What do you want to know?” — not really indicating what my experience is quite yet.

Cop: “I’ve heard that regular (aka “stock”) Dehners sometimes break in bad or crack. The thing is, I need a new pair of motorboots and I can’t afford to get Dehners made of all leather. Is it true what they say about the regular Dehners being easily damaged?”
