Boots at the Ball

I have mentioned before that I am a Life Member of my local fire department, inducted to this level two years ago in recognition of long-term service.

My local FD is holding a “Fireman’s Ball” this coming weekend. What will I wear?

For those of you who have followed me and this blog closely, you know two key things about me:

1) I do not attend dances. Ever. I hate dancing. Or shall I say, since I am such a klutz, I do not dance, never will, and do not want to be in a place where through social pressure, I could be asked and/or “forced” to dance. Nope, dancing isn’t for me.

2) My spouse detests social occasions. A “Fireman’s Ball” is definitely one of those types of events that he would not want to attend.

So why did I say, then, “what will I wear?” Does that mean that I will be going?

Yeah, I reluctantly agreed when the Chief personally asked me to attend. As part of the activities that night, they are holding a fundraising auction, and he wants me to run it.

One of the reasons my “Senior Safety Saturday” events that I do in conjunction with the Fire Department have been so successful is that I have been pretty good at fundraising. I looked back at the accounting of those events, and was astounded when the tally indicating that over 25 of these events, I have raised more than US$487,000 in financial and in-kind support. Wow… almost a half million dollars. Even I impressed myself when I ran the numbers.

So now the Chief wants me to engage people in a fundraising auction which is the centerpiece of this event. Oh great… no pressure.

So, what will I wear?

Lucchese Black Cherry Goatskin Dress Cowboy BootsThis event is semi-formal. Yuck. That means a suit. I can’t get by with wearing my dress or duty uniform.

But I WILL wear boots. Probably my Lucchese Classic dressy black goatskin boots. Those go well with a suit, if I must wear one.

The spouse will remain at home. He can’t stand the noise or fuss of such an event.

And as soon as the auction is over and the band strikes up for dancing … I’m done and outta there.

Life is short: do what you do well, and don’t do what you don’t do well.

  1. So if you’re going to be running the fundraising auction, does that mean you’ll be the bid caller? If so, will you post audio/video of you doing that here? I’d love to see that and I suspect a lot of your readers would as well.

    • Yep, I’ll be the bid caller, but not like the huge fancy auctions you see on TV. I don’t have the experience for that. No video will be taken. I will be using people’s names and that is not information that I will share on this blog. I just want to get it over with.

      • I think you will excel at this and do a first-rate job. Congratulations on continuing to be recognized for your contributions and for be associated with such a great group!

        • I was looking for the “like” button, but forgot that this was not another social media platform. 🙂 Aw shucks, thanks for your confidence and encouragement.
