I am struggling… divided… personally challenged… am I old? How old is old anyway? Is there a “too old for” this-or-that? Too old for going on another crazy-awesome motorcycle adventure? Too old to ride a motorcycle any more at all?
Is it age? Is it physical infirmity? Is it focus and motivations elsewhere like spousal caregiving?
Just what IS it that is causing these internally divided feelings?
Ah ha! I know! The “IT” that is the root cause of these feelings is…
That is the feeling that a guy like me who has ridden motorcycles for just about 40 years and well into hundreds of thousands of miles has deep inside his core. That feeling of freedom, wind in the face, leathers and boots on the bike, scenery that can only be felt and viewed on two wheels.
That feeling is held deep within, and will always be there.
So as I deal with some challenges that keep me focused on what’s important at home (caring for my Spouse and his mother), actions and activities at work that keep me on top of my game, drama in some of my personal voluntary activities — all of this — that “motorcycle itch” keeps me visioning a future of joy, sheer release, and freedom. Even if only for a few days.
That excitement of adventure that I felt last year whilst on the most grand motorcycle adventure with my great friend and riding brother “S” will never be forgotten.
I really don’t want to let it go…
So… who knows? Some time, somewhere, somehow, I’ll find a way to scratch that motorcycle itch again.
Not sure when. Not sure where. But one thing I am sure of — I’m not giving up the Harley or riding any time soon.
There is nothing like that feeling of adventure, fun, thrills, a little fear, and sheer joy that a biker has astride his iron horse out there on the open road while riding with a trusted friend, a “biker brother.” Nothing.
Life is short: scratch that itch and remain forever young!
You sound like my son He is 50 years old and still has that itch also. He and his family all of different type of cycles and still love to ride. My Grandson who is 25 and him are on a trip to California from Missouri. They are in Texas now and I believe it is there they are going to see some race which his kids gave him the tickets for Christmas. I am just a fan of yours and enjoy following your life so you are never too old. I commend you for all the things you do.
Hey good man.
Simple:
DO IT.
‘Nuff said.
