I wear denim jeans, casual shirt, no tie (thankfully) and — always — a pair of boots. Yesterday I was wearing my smooth-soled Chippewa Firefighter Boots.

I was sitting in my boss’ office and had my left leg crossed over my right. The boot was prominent. My boss asked,

“How do you keep the shine on your boots?” He mentioned that he had “marine boots” — Corcorans — that he was issued when he completed boot camp. Those boots, made of all leather, were hard to shine and keep spit-polished. My boss regaled stories about maintaining his boots for military inspections.

But then he asked again, “Those boots look great. How do you keep the shine?”

I gave away the secret. Chippewa Firefighter boots have a thin plastic topcoat like Chippewa Hi-Shine engineer boots do, so they naturally have a shine.

I explained that every time I take them off, I wipe them down with a damp cloth, then spray a very light coating of furniture polish on a lintless cloth and then rub it over the boots. In a minute, the boots have returned to a brilliant shine. A cop taught me that technique — that is how he maintains his stock Dehner patrol boots.

About twice a year, I will resort to using a light coat of wax polish to fill nicks and dings in the boots. But otherwise, a quick spray and wipe with furniture polish does the trick.

BTW… nice to have a boot conversation with the boss, eh?

Life is short: maintain your boots and have them look good to wear to work.

Fridays are casual days in the office.
