Most of my legion of senior pals are women who have outlived their husbands and rely on me to do some home repairs and take them grocery shopping.<\/p>\n

Some of the spouses of my senior pals are alive, and they also appreciate that I take their wives shopping because they hate it. To me, it’s just fun — I must be a glutton for … cookies and smiles. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Anyway, one of my senior pals is married to a man who served in World War II. When I visit this man and his wife, I ask about what he did and what he thought about when he served in the U.S. Army. I learned a lot of history that way. <\/p>\n

Yesterday, I planned a special excursion for my friend.

\n\"WWIImemorial\"My spouse and I went to his house and helped him and his wife into my spouse’s sedan which is more comfortable and easier for them to enter than my truck. I drove them into downtown Washington, DC, to visit the National World War II Memorial<\/a>. My friend and his wife had never been there before.<\/p>\n

We were fortunate to find nearby parking designated for WWII veterans who have physical disabilities. My friend can walk, but uses a cane for support. <\/p>\n

We walked around the memorial. We arrived so early that it was not crowded. All you could hear was quiet — deafening quiet. Then I felt my friend tremble, and noticed that he was weeping. He had found the name of the commander of his unit who died during the war. <\/p>\n

Overall, we were spellbound by the quiet beauty of this memorial — especially “seeing it” through the eyes of a WWII vet. We spent more than an hour walking around, or seated, just listening and thinking.<\/p>\n

It was a great day to spend in the city of my birth, at a place that I am fortunate to enjoy as a local.<\/p>\n

I just wish that my Dad and uncles who also served in WWII could see this place… <\/p>\n
