According to a great source, “Best Stuff for Men: The Denim Guide,” there are over 100 brands of jeans with over 450,000 pairs sold each year in the U.S. Wow… that’s a lot of jeans!

Jeans and boots go well together. A natural combination of casual, comfortable jeans with a pair of boots looks good — whether you choose cowboy boots, work boots, or motorcycle boots. Guys wear denim jeans more than any other type of pants. You can see that for yourself everywhere you look.

I have often been asked what kind of jeans I wear and recommend. Well, I’ve learned a thing or two….

We have to face it, most guys don’t give a damn and choose brands of jeans that they have always worn. Levis and Wranglers top the list, but there are many others. Some store brands are quite good, while others are made by underpaid labor overseas.

I used to wear Levis when I was young, but when they stopped making Levis in the U.S. in 1996, I found the quality of the new Levis was seriously lacking. I asked around, spoke with fellow bikers and some cowboys I know, as well as construction workers. Most of them had not changed their preferred brand, and kept buying and wearing the same-old, same-old. This behavior is typical of guys — “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The thing is, not only did the quality of Levis become worse while the cost continued to rise, I learned that the rolled seam on jeans is not always in the same place. Levis have the rolled seam on the inside of the legs while Wrangler has the rolled seam on the outside. The placement of the seam can make a difference for bikers and horse riders — both of whom may find a rolled seam on the inside of the leg to rub and cause discomfort.

As a biker, I wear jeans most often when I ride my Harley during the warm months of summer. I want jeans that just work — and not be a pain to wear or worry about them getting dirty.

Further, I admit that as I got older, my body type changed. No longer the short, skinny bean pole, I grew eight inches (20cm) after high school and have more “girth” around the waist that happens to most guys in their 30s or 40s. I work at maintaining or reducing it as best I can.

Nonetheless, I found that my high school-era Levis — even in my current waist size — fit me funny when I was older. They were baggy in the butt and tight in the crotch. I had to keep experimenting with different jeans and jeans brands to find the right fit for my body type. I wanted enough looseness in the crotch so I wouldn’t strangle my (private parts) when I swung my leg over the saddle of my Harley, but I also didn’t want them to be so loose and baggy in the butt that the jeans would accentuate the part of my anatomy that I did not want to be prominent.

Guys (being guys) seldom think that they would have to change jeans or jean brands for the fit. But let me tell you, nowadays with so many brands and “fits” available, it’s worth a try again to find jeans that fit you and your body type well. For me, I’ve settled on Wrangler Cowboy Cut Original Fit jeans. Work well for me. But that’s me. You are different. Try on different jeans at a local retailer and spend money locally to support local business.

Without repeating the 12,000-word comprehensive guide to denim, I suggest you sit back and take some time to read this insightful, thorough, blog post for yourself. If you’re like me, you will learn a lot from it. And interestingly enough, I was quoted in it.
