Right now, life is changing for me (and for my spouse) a bit more rapidly than we anticipated. These changes include–
\n
\n* More freedom — this is hard to say, but since The Spouse’s mother died, we no longer have to be tied to our home and be available to drive to her house on a moment’s notice. That is among the reasons why we went to Toronto last week. It was a quiet time at the office for me, and we did not have to worry about being out of the country and unavailable by phone (my 15-yo flip-phone doesn’t work in Canada since it doesn’t have a SIM card.)<\/p>\n
* Dinner when we’re ready — again, this is hard to say, but I was always having to plan when to prepare and serve our dinner meals around the schedule of when Spouse would call his mother and her caregivers, every night at 1745. <\/p>\n
* Deal with the estate of the M-I-L requires time and patience. Her house is now the biggest time consumer; however, we hope to dispose of the house and its contents through donation to qualified not-for-profit organizations during the upcoming months. These changes were expected, and we anticipate doing all that will be required over the next year (or hopefully, less.)<\/p>\n
* Major surgery for The Spouse to deal with his physical mobility issues. They are repairable through surgery. However, the procedure requires being “laid up” for 10 – 16 weeks of physical recovery and rehabilitation. That is among the reasons why Spouse delayed having the surgery because if his mother needed him (or she died), he could not have his travel restricted due to physical rehab requirements.<\/p>\n
* Financial planning and re-planning. With the M-I-L’s estate issues in consideration, we have some more freedom for our future planning on when I will retire, clean up\/repair our house for eventual sale, downsize all our “stuff” (including radical downsizing of my boot collection), and choose when and where to resettle for our future life that does not include ties to a specific geographic area (to be close to the M-I-L) and has less burden of high cost-of-living, taxes, congestion, density, noise, traffic, and such. Heck — we’re not even restricted to staying in the U.S., and may opt to leave depending on the outcome of the 2020 U.S. Presidential election.<\/p>\n
* My retirement from working full-time for a salaried job — eek! Yep — I now have a date in mind. Stay tuned. (Not tomorrow, but this year!) Note how carefully I worded this — I may continue to work, but perhaps not full-time and can do something I enjoy, but not on a demanding a M-F, 40+\/hr \/ week schedule. I’m ready to hang it up.<\/p>\n
