\"\"On Friday, July 28, our ride was through the Bear’s Ears monument area of Utah, north to Hanksville, west to Torrey, then south through the Capitol Reef National Park and Grand Staircase Escalante Monument.<\/p>\n

And rain. Lots of monsoon rain added to unease and actual moments of sheer terror.

\nWe began the dry side of the ride through the Bear’s Ears National Monument. Fascinating scenery.<\/p>\n

North to Hanksville then west to Torrey for a “meh” lunch.<\/p>\n

\"\"Then just as we were entering the number 1 rated motorcycle road in the country, it began to rain. We donned our rain gear and pressed on, south on Utah’s Route 12.<\/p>\n

Capitol Reef National Park was nice, but I admit… I concentrated on riding this big heavy rental Harley safely.<\/p>\n

Then it got worse. Narrow two-lane road to peak elevation of 9,600 feet in the Dixie National Forest, with no guard rails. And wind. And distant strokes of lightning with rumbling thunder added to the “experience”.<\/p>\n

\"\"Then it got worse! Roads narrowed, and there were some stretches with 1,000 foot drops just inches away… no shoulders, either. And the curves! 797 curves on this road. Don’t forget it was raining! Sheesh… if it were not for my riding partner “S”, I would not have made it.<\/p>\n

I survived, and feel good about the accomplishment, but will never do that ride again. Once was more than ample.<\/p>\n
