I thought perhaps the server that supports my website was having a temporary glitch.

But when the website still was not working yesterday morning and I was getting a “server not found” error, I grew concerned. I contacted…

…the web host and asked if they were having a server issue. While unusual, this is not an uncommon thing when using a shared hosting service.

Unfortunately, the web host gave me bad news. “Your domain registrar has suspended your domain.” That’s all they knew.

I contacted the domain registrar, which can only be done with on-line chat. That drives me nuts — I hate chat; you end up chatting with some dude with an American name like Tom (but whose real name is Bangaloosh) in Froministanistedaloor and they confirm they are on the other side of the world by wishing you a good morning when you are contacting them in the evening.

The registrar representative said that they sent me an urgent “reconfirmation” message and that I did not reply. Then they suspended my website. When they did that, duhhhh… I can’t get email. So how in the heck can I click on a link to reconfirm my domain ownership when I can not access email?

Another reason why I hate chat is the these so-called technical support people can only answer from cut-and-paste pre-scripted messages written for them to select as answers. I really do not think that they can think for themselves or write a coherent sentence. (That is to be expected for low-wage workers based in Didlidoolandaloor).

Hmmm…. there was not any pre-scripted messages from which Bangaloosh could select to answer me. He was stumped. I asked to speak with a supervisor by phone, but ol’ Bango could not arrange that. Finally I was referred to someone else who had a pre-scripted message about what to do in that instance.

My domain ownership was indeed reconfirmed once I gave some more information such as the date of original domain registration. I am darn glad I keep documentation and records independent of the cloud and of email. I am so old-fashioned, I print those kind of messages out and actually file them in a folder in a file cabinet. Who woulda thunk?

So now the registrar restored the name server on the domain so my website should be restored. However, as of the time of writing this post, it is not. Ol’ Bingobango’s reference person, I think was named Alisha (but is probably Alibababoorishna or something) told me that it can take 24 to 48 hours to restore DNS.

DNS stands for Domain Name System.

DNS is how domain names are translated into IP addresses, and DNS also controls email delivery. DNS is what allows you to use your web browser to find web sites as well as send and receive email.

DNS makes it possible for us to use easy to remember domain names in place of complex IP addresses (gracechurch.com instead of 209.61.148.168).

DNS is sort of like the white pages directory of the internet – when you enter a domain name into your internet browser, DNS does the directory lookup to find out which server that domain is pointed to and what it’s IP address is and then it responds by displaying the site you requested.

Oh joy, more downtime.

I am glad my website is only for a hobby. If they did that to me and I was using it for business or to generate revenue, I would be livid.

Well, my fault. My domain registrar is a cheap — I mean inexpensive — service. US$9.21/year for domain renewal. Ain’t bad when the going rate is double that or more. I just don’t like this crap of having to prove domain ownership to keep a website working. I have never had to do that before.

So if you have emailed me, or posted a comment on this blog, I may not be seeing the message for a while longer. Your patience is appreciated. My family and close friends know other email addresses to use to reach me.

Life is short: maintain patience with technology, and with so-called technical support from Outer Slobbovia.

I noticed that I was not receiving or able to access email on Sunday night.
